Quick Release Fuel Coupling Leak

After riding today discovered some fuel had been leaking on my left thigh.

Came home and took off the body panels to discover a pool of fuel in the fuel pump assembly housing.

After soaking up all the fuel I was able to source the leak to the quick release coupling.

Assuming it's the O-ring, does anyone know the exact size?

It appears 13 53 7 700 797 is the O-ring used in conjunction with the fuel coupling.

I'm unfamiliar with how O-rings are measued, what size would this O-ring be?

There was a recall on the female side of that adapter.  The base can develop cracks that cause leaks like the one you describe.  I believe there are two solutions: replacing the entire plastic flange with a revised version, and putting a steel clamping collar around the neck of the female side.

If you do need to replace the o-ring, I suggest using OEM.  Quick coupler o-rings are very susceptible to swelling due to gas exposure, and even some substances that have "good" ratings for susceptibility (e.g., buna-N) can swell.  (I know this because I tried to save a few bucks.)  If your only option is aftermarket, try to find Viton o-rings.

Looks like your fuel pump was fixed with metal ring to prevent cracks in plastic.Some dealers did that, other changed entire pump Contact dealer and inform them that easy fix they did is not working. Best case scenario you will get new fuel pump. Worst case scenario you will need to pay for o-ring or quick release coupling. My bet is that they will give you new pump.

Just got off the phone with BMW.

The aforementioned recall was performed back in October of 2014 wherein they replaced the whole fuel pump assembly equivalent to current production (at the time).

I'm going to pick up a couple O-rings and go from there.

I'm hopeful that this will take care of the issue since the male side of the coupling doesn't leak when disconnected. Only when the coupling is connected is there a slow but persistent leak.

A followup email I received from the service manager:

Robert,

You're welcome, glad I can help. We have had problems with those plastic male-end connectors too. As they get older the plastic starts to degrade and can actually crack and break off into the flange.

You could always try the o-ring and see what happens. Maybe you get lucky, only time will tell. Hopefully this helps out a little. If you need anything else let me know.
