Hello Gents,Newbe here w first post & tech question??I found a link in smeones post on ADV rider & it broght me HOME Well,  I do most of the wrenching on my toys and have pretty good mechanical ability in general. I don't like to pay the dealers or "stealers" if I don't have to I was servicing my HP2 last weekend & noticed I needed to clip back in the boot between the output shaft & the swing arm. The securing ring inside of the boot slipped off and was on the on the drive shaft. So I had to pull the darn thing apart.....I managed to get the boot on without taking the swingarm off. NOT easy!!!! BUT I need to do it again because the boot wasnt in the best shape (showing dry rot) I think it will make the season, but I ordered one anyway.Question:There has got to ba a better way... The service manual shows a couple of speciality tools....are they really needed or has someone found another way? Also what is the proper fluid for the FD & capacity, I used 75/140 & filled trough the speed sensor until it flowed from the drain hole... am i good here??  Manual says Castrol XO what is this???Thank you for all your help now & in the future Ride  Safe!!Chris

Sorry man, never pulled it apart. But with over 288 registered HP2 riders here there has to be someone with a clue! Come on guys!

Hello pilot, I am note sure about your problem, maybe few pictures will help, but for the fd you should use, 200 ml on initial fill and 180 ml on oil change. DO NOT OVERFILL. check also this: http://www.jimvonbaden.com/R1200_Final_Drive.html

Thanks xrnik, I came across that site after the fact... After checking it out again....have a look see at the last pic... if you look through his cup you can see the oz.scale on the other side of cup, in my estimation of the grading it looks like abt 10oz. & chk the drain pan..i'm sure some got lost in the process...don.t have any pix of what i did. Just seems an easy do but the manual makes a pretty big deal out of it. I can take some of the swing arm but don't know how to size them down to post Is 100 ml xtra fluid really gonna do any damage?? its not going to pressurize.. i always keep my oils on everything a little high. ???? Thanks

Hello, I don't know 'for sure' if 100ml xtra fluid gonna do any damage, but I am sure, that because of heat+pressure+xtr oil, the fisrt thing that will go off, will be your bearings. And belieave me you don't want, this to happen... So 180ml only...

I've done the FD lube according to spec, which pretty much agrees with JVB's presentation, with the exception of materials.  I used Mobil 1 SuperSyn 75w-140 gear oil and Honda brand moly for the splines (which were dry as a bone at 6k miles).   The SuperSyn did fine and came out looking good.  The Honda moly has the highest % moly of any grease I could find and you can get it at any Honda dealer.
Cannot comment on replacing the gaiter but the procedure looks pretty straightforward to me, and I'm sure those splines need love too. .. .

BM reduced fill quantities from 220ml to 180ml because of blowing seals. An extra 100ml aint going to stay in there too long .............take rear wheel and shock off and raise swing arm to help get gaitor positioned.

My boot has also come off. On wheel side. How did you get it back on without removing singarm

Well, I've taken the plunge and removed the swingarm on my '06. Really not too hard of an operation if you're methodical about it.

I removed it to get to the gaitor between the swingarm and the transmission which had fatigued and disconnected itself from the swingarm.

I'm still in the process of gathering parts for reassembly so it may be a week or so before it's all buttoned up.
